Creemore singer/songwriter Fran Webster has released a new song, a ballad to commemorate the sinking of the SS Asia.
The words to the song were written in 1883 by an anonymous author about one the worst marine disasters in Georgian Bay history when, in 1882, 123 out of 125 people drowned near Manitoulin Island when the passenger ship overloaded with people, freight and livestock was caught in a gale.
Webster said he was part of a Collingwood production of a play written about the sinking of the SS ASIA in 1994, that resulted in the creation of 15 songs.
Around that time he said he discovered emotional words by the anonymous author and decided to put them to music. Webster said he called upon friends and family to play some of the instruments.
There are plans in the works to include it on an upcoming album.
