Habitat for Humanity celebrates 20 years

With the arrival of 2022 comes a Habitat celebration! Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay is proud to honour 20 years of helping individuals and families in need build a place to call home.

“We recognize that we could not have reached this milestone without the support of our community,” said Joy Fleury, Executive Director, Habitat SGB.

Habitat is inviting everyone to take part by attending Habitat’s 20th Anniversary Celebration & AGM.

“This milestone is an important one to recognize, particularly all those who have been part of our 20 years in South Georgian Bay – volunteers, past board members, homeowners, staff, donors, sponsors – past, present and future, everyone who has been part of our past success and anyone who wants to be involved as we keep building our future,” said Fleury.

In the spirit of Habitat’s long history of community involvement, there will be a potluck dinner from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22 at Trinity United Church, 140 Maple Street, Collingwood. (Habitat will take care of the main meat dishes, the public is asked to bring an appetizer, side dish, salad or dessert.) Please RSVP to joy@habitatgeorgianbay.ca or 705-446-9542 x21.

The special guest speaker is Julia Deans, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada (a 49-affiliate federation focused on safe and affordable housing for all.)

Deans is a true champion for Habitat and the transformational impact of Habitat’s work. With degrees from Queen’s, Columbia and Osgoode Hall Law School, Julia practiced law with Torys LLP in Toronto and Hong Kong and built a legal recruitmentbusiness in Singapore before becoming a non-profit CEO with CivicAction, Futurpreneur Canada and the Canada Children’s Literacy Foundation, Chair of Ontario’s Expert Roundtable on Immigration and non-profit and business director.

Her leadership continues to inspire Habitat affiliates to find innovative ways to reach for higher targets and help more families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance of affordable homeownership.

If you have Habitat photographs or memorabilia through the years, please contact Habitat to share them so they can include them in their display of their activities over the years. They are also working on a display of Habitat T-shirts – Build and ReStore – if you have a T-shirt from over the years to loan to the event, please let them know at joy@habitatgeorgianbay.ca or 705-446-9542.
