Hobby becomes a home business for furniture painter

 In Business

Tagon Prentice has found her happy place and a hidden talent, in her garage with a paint brush in one hand, and an old piece of furniture on the work bench, its inner beauty waiting to be revealed.

Through a series of professional changes, Prentice discovered she had a talent for refurbishing furniture that had seen better days or was outdated in style.

With mineral paint, and other tools of the trade, she breathes new life into wooden furniture, taking it from a castoff to someone’s cherished centrepiece.

Prentice was born and raised in Creemore but lived for almost a decade in Belgium with her partner Pedro Everaerts and son Niall. Prentice moved home to Creemore with her family in 2017. She finds her home based business is ideal because of theflexible hours allowing her to work mostly during school hours, and in the evenings.

She also discovered that she had a knack for it, and loved the creativity it.

Prentice said she has always liked old furniture and would improve the odd piece for the home but recently she committed to the craft, launching her business Tay’s Home.

It started with one hutch that she had painted royal blue with a white interior. She posted it online and was thrilled when it sold.

Now she has a number of ready-to- sell furnishings, including wooden tray sets and accessories, and does custom work.

Prentice sources pieces at auction and has also had pieces donated. She said she does a lot of projects in neutral colours, white and black, but she does like to work with bold, fun colours. She can also colour match to a client’s existing decor or aesthetic, and can do minor upholstery work. Being handy, Everaerts helps with pieces that need repairs, and also builds Muskoka chairs, and then Prentice paints them.

“The fun is the painting,” said Prentice. “I love getting up in the morning and coming out here. I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.”

She said she really looks forward to her days in the workshop, where the time flies.
