Keep immune strong to avoid illness

 In Opinion

With the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus (Covid 19) around the world, I have had numerous questions and concerns from patients. So, I want to briefly talk about the virus, how to try your best to avoid it and how to keep your immune system strong. In no way am I saying that my recommendations below can cure the virus – it is a virus that should be taken very seriously and if you have signs or symptoms contact your nearest hospital.
Covid 19 is one of three viruses that are classified as Coronaviruses. They affect the respiratory tract (nose, throat and lungs) and can present with; lethargy, fatigue, cough, sore throat, fever and shortness of breath. The virus is transmitted via respiratory droplets (cough, sneeze, touching someone or something with the virus on it and then touching your mouth/nose/eyes).
The recommendations for decreasing your exposure are the same for the spread of any illness – wash your hands with soap and water frequently, avoid touching your face (mouth/nose/eyes), cough or sneeze into your sleeve and stay home if you are sick.
The virus has the strongest effect on those with a weakened immune systems or pre-existing conditions. My advice is to help strengthen your immune system for any virus, but is especially important in times like this when people are concerned and want to be doing all they can to stay healthy.
1) Take a good probiotic daily – Our immune system mainly resides in our gut and providing it with healthy bacteria will help to fight unwanted pathogens. My favourite brand to use with patients is the HMF series by Seroyal. Try to dose around 25 billion CFUs and above.
2) Vitamin D can be taken in 2000-6000 IU daily (general recommendation for deficiencies). This vitamin will help keep the integrity of your immune system strong while also positively affecting your mood.
3) Vitamin C can be taken in 2,000 mg to 5,000 mg daily – This vitamin helps kill unwanted pathogens that enter the body while also boosting the immune system. For prevention 2000mg is sufficient but if you do have a cold, you can take as much as 5,000 mg (depending on bowel tolerance).
4) Antimicrobial Herbs – This category of herbs helps boost the immune system. They can be used at the first signs of an illness and while you are sick. My favourite herbs to use are berberine, echinacea and oil of oregano.
These herbs are different from Adaptogens like Astragalus (found in Deep Immune by St. Francis) that should only be used when you feel an illness starting. Astragalus can bring down your immune system’s capacity when you are actively sick!
5) Avoid fried, salt laden and sugary foods – These foods deplete the immune system and help viruses grow in the body.
6) Drink lots of water and get your rest – If your body is tired and run down, this is when you are most susceptible to infections and illnesses. Strive for 2+ litres of water per day and 8+ hours of sleep per night to keep your immune system in check.
