Mother-daughter duo publishes book

 In News

Creemore resident Laura Dempster has published her first children’s book, Signs of Spring.

An early childhood educator and aspiring writer, Dempster called upon her mother Elaine Dempster, a Stayner resident. Her mother did all the illustrations in the book, aside from the cover, which she did herself. Mother and daughter share a love of art and Dempster said it was her mother who nurtured her artistic side.

Dempster was working in childcare when the pandemic hit home. She took the opportunity to write the poem for the book, inspired by the signs of spring she was witnessing around her.

The book is about renewal, the benefits of the rain, and all the joys of seeing signs of life in the birds, toads and bees.

In retrospect, she said, it was a blessing to have the time to realize her goal of publishing a children’s book, and hopes to publish more.

She said it has been well received by the children who have read it so far. The 26-page book has nine illustrations done in coloured pencil, and a vocabulary list.

The book is available at The Creemore Echo’s Newsstand, on Amazon and at bookdepository.com.
