Museum of Dufferin presents the works of Steven Volpe

Museum of Dufferin is showing the work of Orangeville resident Steven Volpe, beginning Saturday, April 23.

Born in Mississauga, Volpe’s journey to becoming a full-time artist included some important stops along the way—degrees in both fine arts and education, a teaching stint, and employment as a graphic designer. All have played a significant role in shaping his art. Steven sees himself as part of the tradition of figurative realism, but with a decidedly contemporary sensibility.

“A visual travel log of random entries, or a series of topical modern-day myths? Looking at my paintings together in one viewing, it becomes apparent that there are qualities of each on display,” says Volpe. “Sometimes political in tone, sometimes psychological, always personal, my paintings do bear the imprint of our time. However, I have learned that social commentary can seamlessly coexist with childhood nostalgia—often on the same canvas. I leave room for a bit of humour and visual irony, too. The narratives evolve gradually from a process of discovery and exploration, taking on a life of their own. In terms of process, I find that answering a series of questions can be useful in bringing a scene to life: How many people are in the painting? Are they aware of each other? Where are they? Is the viewer part of the narrative? What is the angle of view? What’s happening beyond the edges of the canvas? What time of day is it?”

“Smoke and fire are recurring motifs in my work. As a very versatile device in a painting, smoke can suggest the productivity of churning machinery or, at the other extreme, environmental destruction. I also like to use art galleries and museums as stages for my dramas—magical places where we go to experience alternate realities.”

The Works of Steven Volpe will be on display at the Museum of Dufferin until July 2. Visit www.stevenvolpe.ca.
