Plan needed for upgrading roads

 In Letters, Opinion

Editor:
As the presenter to council with reference to the change in road speeds, it was important to me to become informed on as many issues related to this topic as possible. Why? There are too many people who have construed opinion and hearsay as “facts”.
What we have learned is that council was influenced by a few individuals and special interest groups and bent to their wishes.
The roads of Clearview belong to the community, which includes all residents and users.
Since our initial presentation we had the opportunity to meet with Mayor Doug Measures, deputy director of public works Dan Perreault, and chief administrative officer John Ferguson.
We had a good discussion involving all sides of the issue.
Our group was educated on engineering standards, liability issues, and budget constraints.
They were made aware of previous studies completed by Clearview’s engineers, policy and reports from the County of Simcoe, and Clearview’s own calming bylaws.
The issues for discussion involved all roads of Clearview, not just a few. We considered what effects road calming will have on the economy, safety, environmental sustainability, and other concerns.
What has come out of the discussion is that Clearview needs a plan for road upgrading. They need a vision, including a budget, to reflect the future needs of our community roads.
Yes, certain roads are in need of attention now, but do it properly. We need council to get it right and speak as one educated, strong voice. As in our original presentation, this topic needs public participation to hear all the voices.
Paul Van Staveren,
Stayner.
