Rock Hill Park, a great memory of youth

 In Opinion

If anybody knows me or visits my home they will soon hear the radio playing old time country music. I listen to Willie Nelson’s Roadhouse all day.

I just picked up In the Hills magazine and there was the best article about Rock Hill Park. It sure brought back memories of being there.

The cars used to park faced up the hill to see the shows and then they built the stage down on the pond with a walkway across it.

It was magical with all the lights twinkling and the music was really good coming over the water.

My brothers drove old beat-up cars then so we would park the cars and then put rocks in front of the wheels so they wouldn’t roll down into the water. Doug’s car had holes in the floorboards so I always took some wet cloths to wipe off the dust before the shows.

I had to look good for Conway Twitty. He was my favourite then. We told a joke about Kitty Wells marrying Conway Twitty a thousand times; she would be Kitty Twitty. Oh, what fun we had then.

One evening there was an awful rain and lightning storm. It was scary for the artists on the stage over the water. I remember we all just sat in our cars and waited. When it cleared, the show went on.

I remember Charlie Pride talking to us all after his show and we would wait sometimes until midnight before the dances would start in the pavilion.

Rock Hill Park was famous at one time and brought thousands of happy visitors to Mulmur.

There is really nothing like it now. It was a place for teenagers and adults to go and enjoy the big names of country music. We sat in our cars outside under the stars and enjoyed the shows. It is truly a great memory of my youth.
