Three flee on foot after single vehicle crash

Residents of Dunedin sheltered behind locked doors Wednesday afternoon as a police helicopter circled overhead and canine units and tactical officers searched the area.
Clearview Fire Chief Roree Payment confirmed that at around 11:30 a.m. crews responded to a report of a single vehicle accident in the area of County Road 9 and the 6/7 Sideroad Nottawasaga. When they arrived, three occupants of the vehicle – two men and a woman – fled on foot, crossing through the river. Payment says situational awareness alerted responders that this was not a normal scenario.
Officers of the Huron West Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment arrived shortly thereafter and gave chase. Area residents report that at one point there were approximately 30 OPP vehicles on scene.
Resident Jason Spilchen says the heavy police presence in Dunedin continued until just before dark. A flurry of text messages between neighbours cautioned people to stay inside and keep doors locked.
Craig Baker, who has been visiting a family getaway in the area for the past 50 years says this is definitely the most excitement he’s ever seen in Dunedin. When Baker and his wife arrived to close up their property for the winter they saw a heavily damaged high-end automobile which had crashed into some trees, and tactical officers with fully automatic weapons combing the woods. An officer on scene told Baker the car had been stolen in Collingwood.
Baker reports that the first of the suspects was found hiding in the donkey barn on a farm just up the 6/7 Sideroad. The search for the two remaining suspects continued for several hours.
A tweet from Payment describes the incident as a great reminder of the hidden dangers that await first responders. He references a stolen vehicle with persons involved in a violent crime involving firearms, and thanks the OPP for being great partners.
OPP was contacted but unable to comment before press time.
