Spirited race a good thing

Editor:

I would like to comment on the article “Mulmur councillors run for mayor, deputy mayor”, particularly the comment from Ross Bailey “Why has this Council decided to destroy itself?”

There is no doubt that this current council’s term was more harmonious. In my opinion, the previous Council was painful to watch, and the council before that needed to be watched. I am glad to see that all three Council categories will be contested. Perhaps Councillor Horner is not the only candidate that felt more comfortable running now that CAO Terry Horner has retired. But if one of the positions had been acclaimed near the deadline, I would have registered to run. Not because I wanted to be on council, and not even necessarily because I thought I would do a better job. I would have done it because I haven’t been impressed with the last three council members who were acclaimed, and I don’t like it when the electorate has no real idea what a candidate’s positions are, or what their vision is for the Township.

So, much like when I ran in 2010, we have two councillors trying to move up, and a four person race for councillor. Which means three people won’t get in. In 2010, the electorate decided to replace the incumbent mayor and deputy mayor. We will never know whether the township would have been better off with a different result, or even if any of the three who didn’t get in felt they had “dodged a bullet”. But at least we had the satisfaction of knowing that there was a spirited, issue orientated race, with candidates with different views. And we have that again in 2018. You can’t really ask for more.

Carl Tafel,

Mulmur Township.
