Time saved is nothing compared to saving lives

 In Letters, Opinion

Editor,
Readers have expressed understandable concern about the impact on drivers of reducing the speed limit to 60 km/hr on Fairgrounds Road and Concession 6. Increasing travel times by 25 per cent sounds like a lot, until you do the math. Driving the 9.2 km from County Road 9 to 91 on Fairgrounds will take an extra 2.3 minutes at 60 km/hr. Driving 16.6 km all the way to Beachwood would add 4.15 min to the drive compared to 80 km/hr. I believe this is a reasonable accommodation to significantly improve safety for all. We need to remember the fatal crash on Fairgrounds in 2019 and the accident on Concession 6 requiring an air ambulance to a Toronto trauma centre in 2020. When road volumes were low, 80 km/hr may have been acceptable. With high volumes, reduced shoulders and poor visibility for passing, it is no longer safe.
