Library plans special activities for Family Literacy Day

 In Community

Taking place on Saturday, Jan. 27 is the 25th annual Family Literacy Day. This special celebration raises awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, libraries, schools, literary organizations and other community groups all across the county have taken part in the annual initiative.

Here at all three branches of the Clearview Public Library, we will be hosting a specially designed program of interactive circuits of literacy brainteasers, challenges and games for some free family fun this Saturday. The action will roll over to Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Stayner Branch, from noon to 4 p.m.

As Friday is a PA day, the free Cooking Up A Storm Workshops are an option to keep your children (Grades 3-9) entertained and energized! To celebrate the Lunar New Year, the kids will be making Fancy Rice, Dalgona Candy and Ginger Tea. Online registration is required at www. clearview.library.on.ca. Please check our website for spots that may still be available for these sessions – Stayner from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Creemore from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.; and (New Lowell from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Future sessions will take place on Friday, April 26 (Wacky April) and on Friday, June 7 (Camp Cooking).

Our ever popular Blind Date with a Book Program starts on Saturday, Feb. 3. This is a chance to discover a new author or a different genre of reading than your usual choices. Try something new! Look for the brown paper parcels at the special displays marked with a Pink Heart at all of our branches. At the New Lowell Branch, the Pink Hearts will also be paired with Penguins in honour of the 49th anniversary of the Sunnidale Winterama event. You are invited to join us in this branch after the Pancake and Sausage Breakfast (8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the New Lowell Legion) to watch the Winterama Parade (11 a.m.) and the Bed Races. We are open until 2 p.m. this day if you need a place to warm up, some quiet time for family crafts or just a moment to regroup after the Fire Guy Live Show (12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.).

Regular programming for children and teens has resumed for Winter 2024. Please check our website for times and dates. Please take note that March Break and Spring begins in just 60 days. Advance notification: We have some very special plans for this year’s annual holiday break. Stay tuned for details!

Looking forward to see you at your favourite branch of the Clearview Public Library!

Michele McKenzie is deputy CEO of Clearview Public Library.
