Aliens descend on library for March Break

 In Events

What do an alien, an astronaut and a leprechaun have in common?

Here at the Clearview Public Library over March Break, we will be hosting multiple activities based on the trending theme of “ToInfinity and Beyond”.

There will be aliens, a chance to be an astronaut, a celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day on Sunday, March 17.

From March 9-10 the Stayner Branch will be the site of a Space Junk Book Sale and Dead Battery Dump. Load up on your reading materials for only $2 per box. (Please BYOBag). At this time, pop into our art gallery to see our vintage science fiction art show and take a selfie with our UFO and some very special guests from “a galaxy far, far away” (Sunday, March 10 from noon to 3 p.m.). Our popular Scavenger Hunt Bingo featuring space objects and aliens will run at our three branches throughout the week. All of our circulation staff have chosen their personal Sci-Fi books and movies from our collection and these items will be on display through out the March Break for your entertainment and enjoyment. It will be easy to escape this world by simply reading or watching a good story!

Janice Harvey (children programs) has crafted a super special activity circuit of STEM activities, games and crafts that explores aspects of space and extraterrestrial intelligence. This family-friendly and free program will take place in the New Lowell Branch from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and then in the Creemore Branch from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12. It will run again in the Stayner Branch on Friday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. (Children seven years and under must be accompanied by an adult to ensure the best possible library experience).

Elaine Hamerton (teen programs) is still taking registrations for the St. John’s Ambulance Home Alone Course (Friday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to noon – Stayner Branch Arena Hall – course fee $55). To confirm your child’s attendance, payment is due at the Stayner Branch by Saturday, March 9 at noon. This program is designed for children nine and older to help them prepare to stay safe in times where they may find themselves alone for short periods of time.

On Saturday, March 16, Elaine is hosting a free workshop crafting Easter Bunny Signs from 10 a.m. to noon at the Stayner Branch for Grade 5+ students. Supplies are limited so registration is also required. Register online at www. clearview.library.on.ca or at your local branch.

Rounding up this slate of activities for this school break on Sunday, March 17 at the Stayner Branch, we will “return to earth” be crafting with pots of gold, rainbows and shamrocks in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

At this time, we will also take a moment to contemplate how society has changed as this date is the fourth year anniversary of the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic – the virus that shut down the world.

We invite you to join us and we look forward to seeing you all at the Creemore, New Lowell and/or Stayner Branch of the Clearview Public Library for your chance to virtually space travel to Infinity and Beyond during March Break 2024!

Michele McKenzie is deputy CEO of Clearview Public Library.
