Canadians say, sorry!
Editor:
This is a letter I sent to my cousins in the U.S., two of whom are first cousins. Our mothers were sisters, born in Barrie in 1898 and 1906.
Canada is so sorry!
According to your president, Canada has been “bad.” We have cost the U.S. billions of dollars in lost revenue and this has been going on for a long, long time. We are truly sorry we have been bad although we are not entirely sure just what we’ve done wrong. I’m certain it wasn’t intentional on our part. Even so, we are being punished with the threat of tariffs.
Your president also declared that Canada relies on the U.S. for defence. He seems to have forgotten about the role NORAD played to keep America safe during the Cold War. NORAD was founded 66 years ago and is still operational in Canada today. Yes, we always felt we could count on America’s support. If a country such as Russia, China, or North Korea, should attack Canada, it would be in America’s best interest to come to our aid. A foreign enemy with a foothold here would threaten the northern border of the U.S.A.
Has your president forgotten the roles Canada played after the 9/11 attacks? When the airways were closed, Newfoundland took your planes, and housed and fed your passengers for two weeks. A month later, Canada stood with you in Afghanistan. Most recently, we sent hydro crews to North Carolina and firefighters to California. We are sorry that none of this seems to matter.
Canada is truly sorry that we have become the enemy.
