Pool in need of costly repairs

The Stayner Centennial Pool will require some costly upgrades, if it is to continue to serve the community. In a report to Clearview Council, Amanda Murray, Manager of Parks and Recreation noted that the average lifespan of an outdoor pool is 30-40 years, and the Stayner pool was built 58 years ago.

Murray said her department has four main areas of concern. First, the mechanical system including filters and circulating pump are beyond their anticipated lifespan. A 2024 estimate put the cost of replacement at $94,500.

Currently, the pool requires annual painting.

“We’d like to investigate refinishing the pool with a membrane with a life expectancy of 25 years,” said Murray.

The cost of the membrane was estimated at $197,950 in 2024.

“The office space at the pool needs to be renovated to meet changing needs of technology and staffing, at an estimated cost of $10,000.

The Parks and Rec department is also recommending installation of a monitored security camera system to combat vandalism at the pool at an estimated cost of $20,000.

“We should be looking at accessible doors for change rooms and washrooms to make us AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) compliant,” said Murray.

Her report to council did not attach costs for those improvements.

The Stayner Centennial Pool is the only pool in the township and is a hub of activity throughout the summer months. Murray said this year approximately 190 children were enrolled in swimming lessons.

There were also Boga Fit classes and lifeguard training sessions.

Without major capital investment, the pool will continue to require frequent and increasingly costly repairs. Council is being asked to consider the overall future plan for the pool as part of this year’s budget deliberations.
