We live on a moderately busy Clearview Township road near Nottawa. We regularly walk our concession (about 1.5 km) where we continually encounter beer/ cocktail cans along the roadside. We cannot in good conscience pass them by so we pick them up. This spring, we decided to keep count. From late March to mid-April, we collected 150 beer and cocktail cans along this one section of road. Given this number, likely accumulated over the winter (about five months) we can assume our road receives about 30 cans per month, or about five to seven cans per week.
Since April, those numbers have held. We never get zero cans on a walk. Why do some people simply toss their waste out the car window with no regard for others? We wonder: are they simply uncaring slobs? Are they fearful of being stopped by the police with an open can? Is the 10 cent deposit too low to induce returning the can to the beer store? Or, all of the above? We wonder if otherresidents of rural roads in Clearview or elsewhere, and readers of The Echo, are experiencing the same problem? Are our politicians aware of the issue?
Clara and Richard Edwards,
Nottawa.
