Acclamations do not reflect a healthy democracy

Editor:

As of Aug.11, four of the five wards in Clearview Township have only one candidate running for council. If that continues until the deadline of Aug. 21, all current candidates in Wards 1,2,3 and 4 will be acclaimed. Only Ward 5 currently has a race, with three candidates running for council.

Having four acclamations out of five wards does not reflect a healthy democracy and it certainly doesn’t guarantee that we have the best candidates for the jobs.

How do we solve the problem? We need more candidates for the four wards that currently have only a single contestant.

It’s not like there isn’t compensation for the jobs and while one wouldn’t become wealthy on council, we need some candidates with a sense of civic responsibility to help shepherd our municipal issues. Please don’t let this opportunity slip away. We need your help to keep Clearview heathy and vibrant.

We hope there will be more candidates who will step forward and decide to enter the race in each of the four wards where acclamation seems inevitable.
