October is Canadian Library Month

Every week is Library Week in our world here at Clearview Public Library (CPL) but we would like to point out that October is Canadian Library Month. This special week (Oct. 18-24) is officially Ontario Public Library Week and it is a week of activity to raise awareness of the valuable role libraries play in the lives of the people throughout this province and country.

Here at CPL, our regular session of fall programming is now in full swing at the Creemore, New Lowell and Stayner branches. Details about our children’s programming, including but not limited to Wee Too Playhouse, Creation Station, and Dragons and Dungeons, is available at www.clearviewpubliclibrary. ca or at the circulation desk of your favourite branch.

Music and Movement and Massage for Infants are programs provided by our partner, Early ON, and registration is recommended by signing in at www. earlyon@e3.ca.

For older tweens and teens, we are hosting a special Glow in the Dark Creations Workshop on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. and then we are partnering with the Clearview Youth Centre for a Halloween Night Meet and Greet at the Stayner Branch on Friday, Oct. 23, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Discover Library Days Outreach takes place on a biweekly rotation at these four community halls every Sunday (Brentwood, Dunedin, Duntroon and Nottawa).

Staff are now creating activity kits for seniors as well as for children. These new “Light Up Your Mind” booklets are a fresh monthly initiative to promote adult leisure and release stress by providing quiet time and brain engagement for a party of one. If you prefer to mix with like-minded readers and would enjoy joining one of two book clubs that meet in the morning and afternoon on the last Tuesday of every month, please contact Gayle Favalaro at the Stayner Branch (705-428-3595).

Our highlight of the week is the 16th annual Georgian Bay Reads event hosted this year by the Springwater Public Library in Elmvale on Saturday, Oct. 24. Cecily Ross is our defender and she will be defending her choice of the best in Canadian literature in front of a sold-out audience. (Tickets may be available if your name is on the Waiting List - book them by visiting www.georgianbayreads.ca).

Please consider this your invitation to join us at the Clearview Public Library throughout this special week to see what we do have to offer, from the latest bestseller to a classic movie, to resources only available by subscription like Press Reader. All you need is your Clearview Public Library card to explore our “universe of stories.”

Michele McKenzie is deputy CEO at Clearview Public Library.
