Vintage dealer has eye out for the unusual

Through a side door off Caroline Street West, there is a treasure trove of vintage finds.

Susan Eastwood has filled her new shop, Eastwood Vintage, with those vintage things that have caught her eye during her travels. Collectors will find dishes, clothing, luggage, some unusual lamps and even a rather naughty Victorian boot jack.

Eastwood said she has collected vintage items since she was a teenager ever since she bought a small oak cabinet that caught her eye and tied it to the car in order to get it home. She still owns the cabinet that got her hooked on a life of browsing for the unusual.

“I love what I do and have done it on a small scale for many years. I thought it was time to do more with it,” said Eastwood.

Eastwood has shared a booth at the Cookstown Antique Market for about six years but has been purchasing for resale for about 14. She said she has amassed a collection, which will supply the store. Some of the items filter through her house and some remain in her permanent collection.

She has a particular interest in vintage kitchenwear from the 1950s and 1960s, which began with Fire King dishes. She bought a set of Fire King diamond mugs early on because they were the same ones she remembers from her family cottage. She said nostalgia is a driving factor in vintage.

“I think that’s why the market keeps shifting,” said Eastwood adding that people are looking for things they have an emotional connection to.

She carries bar and glasswear, lighting, furniture, garden stuff, architectural and industrial items.

The new shop will be enhanced by an online store, where Eastwood plans to sell more product, especially clothing.
