Weather wreaks havoc on Concession 10

About 12 vehicles were stuck in the drifting snow on Concession 10 South on Sunday, Feb. 20.

Newmarket resident John Brock was snowshoeing with his wife at Nottawasaga Bluffs Conservation Area when they came back to the vehicle around 4 p.m. to discover they were stranded.

Brock reports several cars had gone into the ditch, concealed by deep snow, when they attempted to drive along the shoulder. A tow truck was not able to get to the vehicles until the road was ploughed.

Brock said most people abandoned their cars to seek shelter in Singhampton, and several people slept in their cars, however they were lucky to be offered a bed by a local resident.

The road was blocked by abandoned cars and a tow truck was not able to gain access.

In the morning the OPP responded. Because a plough was too wide to get through, a local resident blew enough snow to allow the tow truck to get through.

Brock has voiced his complaint to township officials, having been told by locals that there is a regular problem with snow conditions on Concession 10.

On Wednesday, the 10th Concession North, Nottawasaga between County Road 91 and Nottawasaga 30/31 Side Road was closed due to continually increasing traffic making it difficult for crews to maintain this section of road which was rendered impassable due to icy conditions.

Apparently every vehicle that ended up stuck or in the ditch on Concession 10 Wednesday was headed to Blue Mountain.

“I will continue to remind council that according to Clearview’s Official Plan “through traffic is to be discouraged from using local roads,” said Councillor Doug McKechnie.

The issue of reducing speeds on local roads, including Concession 10, is supposed to come back to council on March 7.
