GODDARD, Peter – 1943-2022

On March 23, 2022, Peter died peacefully of glioblastoma at the Toronto Grace Health Centre Palliative Care Unit. Predeceased by his parents Jack and Audrey Goddard, Peter is survived by his wife Carol Ann (nee Price), daughter Kate Woudenberg (Johnathan) and grandchildren Abigail, Samantha, William and Callan. He received his Diploma piano-solo performer in 1966 at The Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, and at The University of Toronto, a Baccalaureate in Music in 1967 and a Master of Arts (Ethnomusicology) in 1972. Peter started his career as a journalist first working as a pop music critic in 1966-7 for The Globe and Mail then transferring to the more free-wheeling Toronto Telegram where he wrote about pop music and the ascending culture of the era between 1968 and 1971. From there he moved to the all-powerful Toronto Star where he was a music, film and visual arts critic for over 30 years. Peter wrote many books, the last published one was on Glenn Gould The Great Gould, 2017 Dundurn Press. He wrote for radio and TV and has contributed to many publications such as Maclean’s, Exile and The Creemore Star. A memorial followed by a graveside service will take place Tuesday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Erindale Anglican Church, 3041 Mississauga Road, Mississauga.
