Curbside patios expected to remain

Patrons at Creemore eateries can expect to see curbside patios next summer, but not storefront or sidewalk seating.

Clearview Township staff had been asked to review the patio policy adopted in April 2023 to ensure compliance with the Access for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) as well as the safety of pedestrians, workers and traffic.

Clearview council received a report from the Department of Public Works this week. The report recommends that curbside patios include: a platform or deck that is level with the curb; that there is an unobstructed path of travel to the patio from the sidewalk; that there be a visual identifier between the edge of the curb and the patio platform; that a barrier or fencing be securely attached to the top of the decking, and constructed in such a manner as to prevent a pedestrian from climbing or falling into traffic; that the barrier be of a contrasting colour to the platform; and that street furniture be placed in such as way as to not impede a 1.5-metre clear, straight path of travel.

The report further recommends an annual patio permit fee of $350 and an additional $80 per year for a street furniture permit for planters, bistro tables, benches, etc.

Creemore BIA President Nancy Johnston said the report contained no surprises.

Township staff will present a revised policy for council approval in February.
