Trillium grant funds Legion accessibility renovation
Creemore Legion has successfully applied for an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant, receiving $150,000 for accessibility.
The mandate of the OTF is to build the capacity of the non-sector in Ontario and invest in local projects that help build healthy and vibrant communities.
The capital grant will be used to install an automated door at the entrance on the west side of the building, instal non-skid flooring in the hallway and washrooms, and further-improve the washrooms by adding touchless soap dispensers, hand dryers, faucets and urinals.
“As the only service club in town, the improvements are really being done for the community because it’s really a community building,” said Doug Mills.
The improvements will make the venue more navigable for people using walkers and wheelchairs, or any assistive devices.
“We’re pretty excited to get the grant,” said Mills.
The process began back in May when Legion president Jim Henderson appointed a steering committee including Mills, Michael Loranger, Byron Beeler, Laura Earles, Dee Hanson and Bob Biggs. The application was submitted in June and the Legion received the good news last month.
“This will make it a more appealing and safer venue,” said Loranger, who has been appointed project manager by the steering committee.
A contractor was selected through a bidding process and is scheduled to begin work in January. The Legion will remain open during construction, which is expected to be complete by the end of April.
With a capacity of more than 500, the Legion is the largest facility in the area and is used for weddings, celebrations of life, events, and dinners in addition to weekly darts and euchre. The majority of events and activities are open to non-members.
“We continue to look for ways to improve [the facility],” said Mills.
The Legion is also hopeful that its application to OTF’s Resilient Communities Fund will be successful. Grants support projects that help rebuild an organization’s capacity, enhance their resiliency, and meet the changing needs of their communities.
