Mulmur takes creative approach to traffic calming

 In News

Mulmur Township is calling on local artists and volunteers to join a Street Art Collective that will use creative forces to try to slow traffic in multiple locations while showcasing local talent and beautifying streets.

The street art initiative will take place at several locations along River Road/20 Sideroad from the Mulmur- Melancthon Townline to Airport Road.

The scenic road is a destination for drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

“There are a lot of different users and with that has come increased concerns with regards to noise, speed, and pedestrian safety so we looked at various ways to address them,” said Roseann Knechtel, Mulmur’s clerk and planning coordinator.

She said, in conjunction with the OPP, Mulmur proposed to council a phased approach to traffic calming, with the street art being the first phase of a larger plan.

The hope is that the presence of the artwork will slow traffic by making pedestrian spaces more eye-catching.

The community is encouraged to get involved by submitting designs and executing the street art this spring.

Knechtel is willing to meet with people individually to brainstorm, discuss ideas and answer any questions.

The township will supply all of the materials needed.

Artists of all calibre are welcome to make a pitch. Visit mulmur.ca/live/ news/street-art-project for design tips and a list of locations.

The deadline for submitting proposed designs is April 19.

Designs can be submitted by email to rknechtel@mulmur.ca or in person at the township office.
