Radar site to be built in Clearview
The Department of National Defence (DND) is seeking public feedback on a proposed radar installation to be built in Clearview Township. The Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar (A-OTHR) “receive” site, to be located on the 15/16 Side Road South, Sunnidale between Concessions 6 and 7, is part of a key North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) modernization initiative. An online survey will be active until Sept. 15 at https://forms-formulaires.alpha.canada.ca/en/id/cmbkya3i800imvn01s2mxa7be
In June 2022, the minister of national defence announced a 20-year plan to modernize Canada’s contribution to NORAD, with total funding of $38.6 billion. As part of the plan, a new early warning radar coverage system will significantly expand threat tracking of objects entering Canadian airspace.
The Clearview Township site is 288 hectares (roughly 711 acres) of agricultural land. Initial work is expected to begin in winter 2026, with the radar network projected to be operational by the end of 2029. A DND spokesman says the construction phase will generate short-term employment in ground works and site preparation. Ongoing control of the facility will be through normal NORAD processes. It is possible that some facilities management functions will be housed at CFB Borden.
Public consultations will be held to share information and collect input from Indigenous, intergovernmental and community partners. The DND will also carry out environmental and site studies, including assessments of climate risks, wildlife and land use, prior to beginning construction.
The department will host information sessions and town halls where the public can learn about the program from DND representatives and technical experts, ask questions and share feedback. Dates and locations will be announced soon.
