Throughout the years playing baseball, he demonstrated respect and sportsmanship to coaches, players and officials. He greeted the opposition players when they arrived at the New Lowell diamonds.
Walker welcomed all his teammates whether they were experienced baseball players or new to the sport. He made all players feel like valued members of the team. He readily mentored younger players on fundamentals to play the catcher’s position whileachieving success.

Team of the Year Award – New Lowell Knights 2022 to 2023
The Knights, a mainstay in the North Dufferin Baseball League since 1967, have enjoyed great success in recent years, winning league championships in 2015, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2023. They were also finalists in 2017 and 2021.
As a result of the team’s hard work by the players and coaches they have continuously demonstrated great success in the sport of baseball for the community of New Lowell and Clearview Township. Moreover, by their victories and representation in both league and provincial championships they demonstrate that successful baseball programs can be found within smaller communities in the province. The team’s core roster has not changed significantly in the past 10 years, winning the Strothers Cup five of those years.
Builder Award – Richard Gauthier
Richard Gauthier is a local business owner, and president and director of hockey operations for the Stayner Siskins, a PJHL Jr. C. team he first played for 35 years ago. The team celebrated its 50th season in 2022/23, advancing to the Schmalz Cup Championships in 2022 and 2023.
Described as a formidable defenceman playing for the Siskins at 17 years of age, Gauthier has held virtually every staff position on the team as assistant coach, head coach and general manager before stepping into his current role, all as a volunteer.
Dozens of hockey players have extended their years of competitive play in Stayner where a small-town team has consistently “punched above its weight” and developed a consistent fan base. The Siskins have won nine regular season titles and four league or division championships in the past 25 years and appeared in the provincial championship finals for the Schmaltz Cup in 2017, 2021 and 2023 seasons.
Community Volunteer Award – Brian Hoysa
Brian Hoysa has been a member of Kinsmen for at least 10 years and has the privilege to be Stayner’s Santa. Hoysa loves his role and looks forward to seeing all the kids’ faces along with their families. He has been asked to be Santa for the Tree Lighting, the Firefighters Christmas party, the Blue Mountain Manor Nursing Home and so much more. Hoysa loves kids’ faces when he makes a comment on how much they have grown or talks about the colour of their snowsuit. Hoysa loved visiting the nursing home and seeing the joy on the resident faces.
He also came to Byng Public School during their Christmas assembly and he even got on St. Noel school bus, to see all the kids. A couple of years ago, Brian got an opportunity to go to Barrie for the Children Connection Program to meet and greet the children and hand out presents.
Festival & Event Award – Ruff Mudder
Ruff Mudder, a five-kilometre obstacle adventure event held at TGK Farm in Stayner, began in 2014 as part of the veterinary clinic’s open house and has grown to an international sensation. There are over 40 permanent and natural obstacles on the Ruff Mudder course with another 40+ tunnels, ramps, temporary lined ponds, chutes, stiles and spider webs.
In 2023 it attracted more than 1,000 people, from all over North America. Ruff Mudder is a fundamental part of the family farm; it allows the farm to diversify, increases the amount of land lying fallow and gives people insight into the daily workings of a successful farm. The Moon Dog Walks (held on the Saturday night) provided participants with a tour of the farm and included discussions about environmental impact, sustainability, crop rotation and diversification. The event is a testament to how innovation can save the family farm and build a multi generational business.
Artist Achievement Award – Grenville Bray
Gren Bray was the driving force behind the creation of the Clearview Community Theatre in 1996, since then over a thousand cast members, many of them youth, have participated in productions of musical theatre. In addition to CCT productions and under Bray’s direction, has had troupes no auditions required, open to all ages singing, playing ukulele, and performing together. Many times bringing families out together.
Bray always made a point of being inclusive, of all who were interested in participating, if they were unable or unwilling to be on stage, he would find something backstage that would suit their talents. He also provided the training necessary like set construction, lighting, audio and sound. He is a master of all when it comes to the theatre. Bray has always had high expectations of the cast and crew under his direction. He pushes people to be their best and they always meet his high standards, unwilling to let downs this man that has been a director, mentor, friend and family to all.
