Event fostered appreciation for farming community
Editor:
I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks and congratulations on the success of the Tea and History event at Station on the Green (March 23). The discussion on pioneering farming families in the Purple Hills was both engaging and enlightening. The display tables, filled with family histories and farming artifacts, offered a rich and personal glimpse into the past, making the event truly special. The diverse mix of attendees – from lifelong farmers to weekenders, town residents, with guests spanning nearly a century in age – highlighted the deep interest in our local agricultural heritage.
Jim Angie’s introduction to the role of agricultural reporting in the Owen Sound Sun Times, alongside photographer Willie Waterton, provided a fascinating perspective on how media coverage of farming has evolved over the years. Many local residents were identified in the historic 1980s photographs!
The panel discussion with six local farming families was particularly insightful. Hearing about the changes in farming since their ancestors arrived in the 1840s, as well as the current challenges and opportunities in the industry, gave us all a deeper appreciation for the resilience and adaptability of our farming community and their roles going forward.
Thank you to Purple Hills Arts and Heritage Society for organizing such a meaningful and well-executed event. I look forward to participating in future Tea and History sessions. Congratulations again on a job well done!
