Country roads are a good place to walk
Editor:
I am writing regarding Cat Flack’s letter “Roads are for cars, not hikers”.
While I agree with her point that walking “two, three or even four abreast” on a road is dangerous, that is about all that I agree with in her letter.
Roads, particularly country roads, can be good places to walk. What contributes to the dangers of these roads is the excessive speed limits.
Country roads, either gravel or paved, should not have a speed limit of 80 km/h. This speed limit is the same given for good highways, such as 89 and 9, that have much better sight lines and wider shoulders.
And when it comes to safely travelling country roads, it sounds like Ms. Flack could learn a thing or two. Admitting to driving 80 km/h on a road that she describes as “a busy, winding, gravel road” that is “fraught with wildlife, washboards and various other man-made and natural perils” isn’t safe.
