Creemore Legion raises $4,200 for SCI Vimy trip

The Creemore Legion Ladies Auxiliary hosted a fundraising dinner Oct. 15 for SCI students travelling to Europe in the spring to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The dinner raised $4,200 for the trip. Legions in Creemore, New Lowell and Stayner donated the food, resulting in increased proceeds.

Students set tables, peeled potatoes, made salad, served, cleared and washed dishes.

While at the Creemore Legion, students had an opportunity to view the archives of the Creemore Legion and learn about the contributions of our local veterans. While looking at the photos of veterans, many students were able to pick out family names that they recognized.

“We would like to publicly thank everyone who contributed to this amazing community event,” said teacher coordinators Janice McLeod and Pam Jeffrey. “Special thank you to the Legions of Clearview Township, to Fox’s Bakery in Barrie for donating all the buns, Maureen McLeod for her generous donation, Jim Henderson and chef Mark Madill who produced a delicious dinner, the bartenders, Jim and Dawn Richards, who donated their tips, the Ladies Auxiliary for their extraordinary community contributions, and a standing ovation for Dee Hanson for spearheading the event and being the driving force who helped us to raise over $4,000. Stayner Collegiate is proud to be a part of such a supportive and caring community.”

SCI students in Grades 9-12 will travel to Northern France next April to mark the anniversary, by way of Amsterdam and en route to London, England.

Along with students from other area high schools, the SCI delegation will depart April 5, 2017, beginning their tour in Amsterdam with a visit to the Anne Frank House and the Jewish Museum, then travel to the Vimy region to take part in the 100th anniversary commemorative activities. They will visit the Wellington Quarries before crossing the English Channel from Calais and on to London to see the sights, like Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The cost of the trip is about $3,700 per student.

The school is fundraising with the hope of covering additional costs for transportation and supply teachers, which adds up to about $9,000. The school is also selling windshield washer fluid for $4 per jug or $15 for a case of four. People are welcome to visit the school during regular hours to purchase the washer fluid and call 705-428-2639 for sponsorship opportunities.
