Martial arts family wins gold at worlds

A trio from Maizis Martial Arts Academy went to Dublin Ireland Oct. 6-16 to represent Team Canada at the WMO World Championships.

The event took place over three days, with eliminations on the first two days, and finals on the last day.

Alexandros Maizis, at his second world championships, had a strong showing.

Maizis won gold in boy’s 13-15 years over 65 kg continuous fighting.

He won silver in boys 13-15 years over 65 kg point fighting, and silver in boy’s 13-17 creative/musical kata.

Maizis also earned a silver for his help with the AWAD (Athletes with a Disability) division.

Kevin Colquhoun, in his first ever world championships, competing against people up to 11 levels higher than himself, had an outstanding day.  Colquhoun won gold in men’s over 80 kg continuous fighting.

He then went on to win silver in men’s over 80 kg point fighting.

Soke Michelle Maizis was also in fine form. She won gold in women’s over 60 kg point fighting and gold in women’s Japanese kata.

“It was an amazing team to be part of,” says Soke Maizis,” I am so proud of my husband and son. It was a fantastic experience made that much better by having our family competing together.  WMO is a terrific organization.”
