Please, give a crap

 In Letters, Opinion

As someone who has recently enjoyed the company of the four-legged variety I can’t help but notice the lack of dog owner etiquette in and around our little village.
Just the other day I noticed a young man enjoying his morning stroll down main street when I witnessed to what we all can sympathize… that look of disgust as he tried to scrape whatever he had just stepped in off the bottom of his shoe!
This is an ongoing problem in town and not just a seasonal one. So I went on a poop crusade, if you will.
As we walked along Caroline Street West on our way to the unofficial dog park (for those who don’t know it’s the old public school location), I picked up four loads, none of which belonged to my four-legged friend. We utilize the side gate entrance closest to the building where there are green waste bags tied along the fence just in case you have forgotten one (it’s also a good reminder to stoop and scoop.)
But just below them sit a couple filled ones! Really? You can take the time to pick it up but can’t take it with you?
As Charger enjoyed a little run around the school yard, I continued my crusade and picked up what I could, along with some of the shrapnel of old doggie play toys.
This location is not public property, it is a lovely fenced in area that we use at the moment and this is how we treat it?
Sadly this is not the only area that pet owners are turning a blind eye to.
There are a lot of dog owners who feel it’s OK to let their dogs do their business and leave it. “It will decompose, it’s natural.”
I can understand this mentality on your own property but not on others’ or in communal spaces.
The area beside Fawcett’s is littered with turd, not to mention the field behind it… Francis Street East and the parking at Station on The Green, just to name a few.
I can only imagine what the new village green will be like if we continue down this path.
There is no excuse not to stoop and scoop. This is your duty as a pet owner!
According to a municipal bylaw, every person who owns or harbours a dog shall forthwith remove and dispose of excrement left by the dog on any public property or private property in the Township of Clearview.
Waste bags are available for a $1, with an eco-friendly choice at Creemore Home Hardware. You should put the waste into your green bin but one of the five lovely waste receptacles provided on the Main Street will do in a pinch. I also have a green bin outside my business (Creemore Pizza Co.) and extra bags or newspaper just in case.
It’s 2020 people this shouldn’t be such an issue! Let’s help keep our little town poop free!
Lori Judzinski,
Creemore.
