Name changes, sign of acceptance, understanding

 In Letters, Opinion

Editor:
As a proud Métis (and direct descendant of Louise Riel), I attest that the Creemore baseball team name “Braves” is offensive, and needs to change.
Currently throughout both the pro and amateur sports world, teams are taking swift action to replace derogatory names. This movement is a welcome sign for us of real acceptance and understanding towards our Indigenous nation.
Christopher Dodd’s article in The Echo (July 17) was a masterful expression of the necessity of the name change from “Braves.”
Perhaps it will give members of our community the opportunity to suggest a choice of another name, possibly with some connection to Creemore’s past history.
Also with respect to covering the cost of new uniforms, I will be among the first to donate.
Evan Dodd,
Mulmur.

How much are you going to donate, Evan? Those jerseys are expensive. Have you always been outraged by our team name? I am a player and I wear our jersey with pride.
