Kudos to one of the good ones

As the world teeters on the brink of World War 3, talking about the sport of hockey seems pretty week and fruitless at the same time, but nevertheless I want to recognize an individual who has gone far above the call of duty when it comes to being a general manager of a Junior C hockey team.

I first met Sandy Bell in the summer of 2015 when our son was trying to make a junior hockey team after his time was up in Creemore. At the time, Sandy was the GM of the Caledon Golden Hawks – he liked what he saw in Brendan and so began a five-year Junior C career.

Seven years later and with a different club, Sandy reaches the 1,000th game milestone of being behind the bench with a Junior C hockey team. This equates to roughly 20-plus years – a milestone that I hope the OHA recognized him for.

While trying to talk him into coming to Creemore last summer to help me out with the Coyotes, he showed me a text he had received from a former Caledon player, who had almost finished his studies to become a medical doctor. “That’s what it’s all about,” he said to me. So kudos to you Sandy Bell for not looking for any monetary gain or personal benefit but instead helping tomentor these young men as they enter the workforce and start a career. If only there were more people like Sandy in the business. Stop in at the Shelburne Woodland and say hi to Sandy. I’m sure he’ll be up in his Ivory tower trying to sort through all the paperwork on his desk.

Tom Macham,

New Lowell.
