2022 Candidate profiles: Clearview Township

 In News, Uncategorised

As part of our election coverage, The Creemore Echo has invited candidates in Clearview Township to introduce themselves to readers, presented here by ward/position in alphabetical order:

Running for deputy mayor:

CHUCK ARRAND

Chuck Arrand was born in Ottawa, met his wife Rose while serving his country, and after lengthy military careers, his wife and he settled in Clearview.

He spent his military time solving problems on the logistic and transportation issues for military operations.

He retired a Warrant Officer working as the base fleet manager and had completed all his senior leadership courses.

Chuck had a few things on his bucket list to accomplish and got those items completed while working for local companies in the trucking industry. Chuck joined the local Legion and worked with many people and organizations within the community and became the branch president for the last five years. This time gave him the opportunity to work with the local youth organizations, the area hospital organizations, the amateur sports organizations and to support their efforts. At the conclusion of his presidency, he moved up to become the zone commander of the 12 area branches.

Chuck’s hobbies are motorcycling, touring the country on two wheels with his wife. Now he’s looking for the chance to serve his community after serving his country.

DEBORAH BRONEE

I am a graduate of Western University with a BA in Administrative and Commercial Studies. I have also, among other courses, completed the Municipal Administration Program.

I am a descendant of a farmer from the 9th Concession of Sunnidale, two generations of schoolteachers, and a father who spent most of his working career in municipal government. Through their example, they molded how I view my responsibility to my community. Everyone has something to offer to make our community a better place.

I live here with my husband Trevor, a business owner for over 30 years. My mother, children, and grandchildren also make Clearview their home.

I served on Clearview council for eight years in the ward that covers the New Lowell/Brentwood area.

My professional career includes over 30 years of experience in municipal government beginning at the City of Barrie in Public Works and retiring in June from Social Services at the County of Simcoe.

I have held lead roles in a number of community groups, including secretary of New Lowell Baseball, treasurer, vice president, and driver trainer of the local snowmobile club, and I am currently chair of the Creemore New Lowell United Church Official Board.

I have volunteered municipally in many areas, including as a member of the Culture and Recreation, and chair of the Accessibility Advisory Committees, chair of the Small Halls Festival, mentor for the Cybergnomes Robotics Team, and chair and member of the Sunnidale Winterama Committee.

PAUL VAN STAVEREN

I am a 33-year resident of Clearview Township. I graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Agricultural Mechanization and Agricultural Business. Following graduation, I worked for a bank in commercial and agricultural credit. I started our business, Stayner Rental, in 1989 and was joined by my wife, Edina, in 1993. Together we raised three children, Peter, Karen, and Diane, while running the business. This past December we sold our business to Cooper Equipment Rentals. I will be fully retired on Dec. 15 and will continue to help with our family farm. I enjoy playing hockey and cards, working on farm machinery, and driving around with our farm dog Charlie.

My involvement in the community has included president of Stayner Minor Hockey, president of Stayner Kinsmen, past member of Clearview Economic Development, and long-term member of the Centre for Business Development.

I have been encouraged by family, friends, and community members to run for council. As a businessman, I recognize the need for fiscal responsibility. As a family man, I recognize the need for social services. Supporting our local farmers and entrepreneurs is imperative for a successful community. I thank everyone for their encouragement and support of Clearview’s municipal election.

Ward 1:

PHYLLIS DINEEN

I am the incumbent Ward 1 councillor for Clearview Township. I am retired from the CGMH and I have been a realtor since 1998.

My family has lived in Clearview Township for over 50 years. Kevan and I have two sons and our grandchildren attend public school in Nottawa.

I am running again to give back to my community and all residents of Clearview Township.

If elected I intend to continue to listen to people’s concerns/ideas, act when I can and make informed decisions about matters at council.

I am proud of council’s support of the Clearview Food Bank during the pandemic and our commitment to address climate change.

We all have a duty to protect our environment.

As well I have had the opportunity to be on an Attainable Housing sub committee.

Someone asked about diversity in Clearview everyone has the right to be heard and accepted. We believe in our communities and support our neighbours.

I feel our tax base needs to be stimulated with growth but not at the expense of our residents.

I would like resources for our older residents to be addressed so they can continue to live in their own communities.

I believe that those who travel our roads everyday, as well as those passing through Clearview, deserve to do so safely.

Moving ahead I look forward to working towards maintaining the integrity and quality of life in our Communities within Clearview Township and I will continue to advocate for our residents.

Ward 2:

ROBERT McARTHUR

I have lived my entire 59 years at Cashtown Corners. I run the family farm, which has now been in my family for over 100 years, raising crops, cattle and even some prize winning Belgian horses. I have also worked for Reinhart Foods for 26 years, one of the township’s largest employers, where I progressed through multiple roles and am now nearing retirement.

With the realignment of the wards in Clearview, Ward 2 is now the biggest, covering over 15,000 hectares. I have either farmed, visited, drove around, helped put out your fire or medical emergency or in the good old days, snowmobiled on nearly every one of them.

I was an active member of 4H and junior farmers, even serving as president of South Simcoe junior farmers association.

I was a volunteer firefighter with Clearview fire department Station 4 for 15 years, where I worked my way up to captain.  I am also an active member of the Creemore Curling Club, where I started curling at age 10.

Giving back to my community comes naturally. My dad, Milton, was elected the first deputy mayor of Clearview.

THOM PATERSON

Jacquie and I moved to Creemore in 2004. I’m a retired telecommunications engineer/executive. I have had active roles as a volunteer on local community groups. As a municipal councillor since 2006, I’ve served as the municipal representative on township boards and committees and on partner agencies.

As a member and past president of the Creemore Area Residents’ Association (CARA), I represented the concerns of the village and surrounding rural area on township matters. I have been a participant in various environmental initiatives that led to the reduction in the use of single use plastics in our homes and businesses. As a member and past president of the Tree Society of Creemore, I promoted the care and addition of heathy tree stock to our aging village canopy.

I served as the council representative on the Creemore Medical Centre Board during its expansion, on the Creemore BIA in support of our local business economy, and on the Avening Hall and the Station on the Green hall boards sustaining their value as local community gathering centres. As a member of the Creemore Log Cabin and Jail Service Board, I worked to preserve and maintain these heritage buildings.

I have also served as the chair on the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Board, as a director on the NVCA board, an appointee on the efforts to save the Duntroon Elementary School and a member of the citizen engagement committee for the Village Green.

I commit to continue to work on your behalf.

Ward 3:

JOHN BRODERICK

I am the current councillor in Ward 3 for Clearview. I am currently a council representative on four boards: Clearview Chamber of Commerce, Creemore BIA, the Clearview Library Board, and the Clearview Accessibility Advisory Committee.

Starting in 1979, my wife Rhonda and I have operated J&R Cycle (in its present location in Clearview Township since 1982). Our three daughters were born and raised here in Clearview Township.

We both sat on the board of directors for the Wasaga Snowmobile Club and, with the support of great volunteers, the club won the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs’ club of the year award in 2010, followed up with the National Club of the Year award in 2011.

I was instrumental in bringing the Snowmobile Officer Trail Patrol (STOP) program to Simcoe County in 1996 and was a STOP officer until the program ended in 2006.

Rhonda and I, with a great group of volunteers, formed Central Ontario ATV Club (COATV) in 1979. I was the club’s original president until I stepped down to become the president of the Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicle Clubs (OFATV) in 2001, a position I held for three consecutive two-year terms during its formative years. I was the OFATV liaison working with MTO on the development of Regulation 316-03 and Bill 11, which allowed ATVS road access way back in 2003.

I am asking for your support to re-elect me as councillor in Ward 3 for Clearview Township.

Once elected, I want to bring change to the community by improving security, self-awareness and growth.

My main concerns are, public safety, drugs education for youth and adults, jobs, and affordable housing.

RICHARD PAUL

I’m a hometown boy, born and raised here in Stayner, as were five generations of my family before me.

I am a Byng Public School and Stayner Collegiate Institute alumni, and went to Georgian College in Barrie to get my business-accounting diploma. I am a small business owner of a bookkeeping and income tax preparation company.

I got married in Stayner to my lovely wife, who I had to import from the “big city.” Honest, that’s how she describes herself! She jokes to her big city family that because my family has been here for so many generations, there’s no one left in town I wasn’t related to somehow. We have a teenage son, two cats and a five-month-old puppy.

I have served more recently on the local volunteer board of a federal political party. I have previously served on the board of Clearview Public Library from 2004-2012. I have been a board member or treasurer to many organizations throughout the years, from church to the chamber.

My hobbies include reading biographies, researching genealogy and local family history. I am also known to chill out with Netflix once in a while.

Ward 4:

ROBERT WALKER

I have lived in Stayner for over 65 years. My wife Judy and I just celebrated 50 years of marriage. We have three grown daughters and their spouses, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

I retired from the Simcoe County District School Board after 33 years as a custodial supervisor. I’m a collector of old toys, coins and stamps.

I was a councillor for Town of Stayner from 1981-1994 and a councillor for Clearview Township from 2004 to the present. Over those 31 years of being on council, I have served on all municipal committees and chaired most.

I am an active member of the Stayner Lions Club for over 20 years. I was a member of Clearview Community Theatre for over 20 years, a volunteer firefighter for 17 years in Stayner. I also umpired for 30 years, coached Stayner Ladies Fastball and coached Stayner Minor Hockey.

I’m a dedicated, community-minded, team player, striving to enhance the quality of life for ALL residents of Clearview Township.

BRANDON WARD

While I have no previous political experience to date, I decided to run after much encouragement from the community.
As I have been heavily involved in the Stayner community over the past few years, I found it was time to take on a bigger role within Clearview. I believe my volunteer service experience and drive can benefit my community and its residents.

My experience with politics has been empty promises, and because of that I’m running on the basis of ‘I am your voice. Regardless of the concern, you want it voiced, I’m the representative you want.’

My goal is to get out, meet and listen to the residents. I may not be able to fix all concerns but I will always make sure their voices are heard and concerns are properly passed up the line.
