Project celebrates Black youth art

 In News

Black youth ages 13-18 are encouraged to participate in a series of workshops intended to create a unique work of art.

Making Change is announcing Canvas for Change, a special art program for youth across Simcoe County, in recognition of Black History Month in partnership with the MacLaren Art Centre, Shak’s World Community Centre, and Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library. Canvas for Change will be under the guidance of Toronto-based artist mentor Ashante Blackwood, who will guide youth over three workshops in December and January on the process of conceptualizing, communicating, and visually representing ideas that are unique to their own stories and perspectives. It is an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of aspiring young artists, to spark conversation, and to draw attention to the rich visual arts culture and talent among young people in Simcoe County.

This program is geared for high school students from around Simcoe County who recognize themselves as Black, Caribbean, African, Black Canadian, African American or of mixed-race descent. Students are encouraged to apply with a statement of interest and the submission of their own recently completed original artwork. In early December, up to 20 applicants will be selected to participate in this program. The deadline for submission is 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27.

The final artwork will be part of a travelling group exhibition in February, on display at the MacLaren Art Centre and Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library with an opening reception at MacLaren Art Centre. For more information on applying, visit maclarenart.com.
