String quartet to kick off Gift of Music

 In News

This season the St. Luke’s Gift of Music concert series is continuing with its tradition of bringing up-and-coming young classical musicians to Creemore. We have worked with musicians from several schools of music over the years, most notably from the Glenn Gould School of Music. Last year, in our search for a classical guitarist, we contacted University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, and were delighted to work with Tariq Harb, who has since gone on to win several international awards. Members of University of Toronto’s Ton Beau String Quartet will open this year’s season for us on Sunday, November 18 at 3 pm at St. Luke’s Anglican Church.

The Ton Beau String Quartet has performed for the Almonte in Concert series, Toronto’s Arts and Letters Club, Hart House Midday Mosaics, and for the Music at Noon series at Wilfrid Laurier University. The quartet has also participated in a two week Creative Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the St. Lawrence String Quartet Chamber Music Seminar at Stanford University, and in Quartetfest at Wilfrid Laurier University. They have performed in master classes for the Ebene Quartet, Lafayette Quartet, Miro Quartet, St. Lawrence String Quartet and for the Tokyo String Quartet.

As individuals, members of the quartet have performed in Austria, Germany, Finland, Brazil, China, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Spain as soloists, chamber and orchestral musicians. Between them they have also performed with groups as diverse as the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Sinfonia Toronto, the World Orchestra, and the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. On the 18th, the quartet will be performing music by Beethoven, Dvorak and Riho Maimets.

The following Sunday, November 25, we are delighted to bring back Tariq Harb, winner of the 2011 Montreal International Classical Guitar Festival. Following all of our concerts, we will continue with our tradition of gathering with friends and neighbours to meet with these talented musicians over complimentary refreshments.

Tickets ($15 or 4 for $50) may be purchased at Curiosity House Books, the Echo, and at the door.
