40 years for best little show on snow

 In Community

Winter is certainly in the air since the Christmas season has passed. With this cold wintry weather comes the fun of winter sports and winter activities that keep us all going until spring.

Winterama is one of those special events we look forward to each February.

Can you believe that we have been hosting the Best Little Show on Snow for over 40 years?

Yes, 40 years ago a few people wanted to ward off the February blahs and came up with the idea of having a Winterama in our tiny village.

Those first few years it was held on the pond when the pond froze over soon enough and deep enough for all the activities to take part at the park. Everything was done outside with the parade, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, log sawing, and the inside activities took part in the Legion with the crowning of the Snow Queen and the final night wind-up big dance. Things, and venues, have changed but the Winterama still has all the fun that it originally had. This year is starting up to be a special one with the spaghetti supper (sponsored by our firefighters) on Friday evening. Starting on Saturday watch the parade (get your float all ready) attend the events at the Recreation park, craft and pie sale at the New Lowell United Church, and warm up activities at the Library. Bring your family as there will be something for everyone. Start your Saturday off with a pancake breakfast at the Legion. This is a great way to get a warm, sweet start to a fun filled community day. See you there! Soon you will be receiving a brochure in the mail with all the details of this fun 40th anniversary event.

The New Lowell United Church invites you to come to weekly worship at 9:45 a.m. In the coming weeks our Sunday School will begin at the same time. The Fellowship Hall is almost all complete with a new floor and the lift will be ready. The final touches of the renovations are just about done. It is totally accessible to all and we invite the community to come. Remember if you wish to use the Church Hall for birthday parties or small events, call 705-424-1476.

Since I last chatted with you the church had a fantastic opening on Christmas Eve with standing room only for a meaningful service conducted by Rev. Leslie Searles. The church was very thankful for the generous donation from the New Lowell Legion to help with the payment for the new elevator lift. That was a welcome Christmas present!

Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Tuesday), traditionally the day before the beginning of the Lenten Season in the Christian Church, is on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The New Lowell United Church is hosting a pancake supper from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The dinner will include pancakes with all the trimmings, sausages, dessert and beverages all for $10 per adult, $5 for youth 6-12 and $5 for children under six.

This is a fundraiser for the church so bring your family and come and enjoy the evening out maybe make it a treat for your mom by having dinner out!

Calling all seniors (actually anyone around the age of ?) that would like to have a cup of tea and bring your own craft or learn a new one on the first Tuesday of each month! So let’s start on Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. and ending at 4 p.m. drop by the church for a little chat time with your friends and neighbours. We hope to see you. Perhaps a friendly game of cards, scrabble, some knitting etc. will take place. This will help us get through ‘til spring and then maybe it will be all about getting ready for spring!

There are some Happy Birthdays in January in and around town and especially with one young lady… all I can say is she is now able to handle the big steering wheel!

I personally know she does understand the dashboard signals so let’s hope she understands the rest of the driving skills! Happy Birthday January babies!

We have had our share of slipping and sliding this month please travel carefully and if you have news for in and around New Lowell just email me at sandra@bednarek.ca or call 705-424-6497.

Happy New Year and may today be filled with happy memories and may tomorrow be just the beginning of a very special time.
